چکیده

Designers usually complete the design with nominal dimensions and allocate tolerances only at the drawing stage. This practice can cause the following problems: (1) unnecessarily tight tolerances that require expensive manufacturing processes, (2) parts whose proper functioning is contingent on excessively tight tolerances, and (3) situations where slight wear on a part can seriously modify the behavior of the device. There is a need for computer-based techniques which will allow designers to investigate the effect of manufacturing tolerances on the function their design performs. This paper presents a means for capturing the kinematic behavior of a device and relating it to the tolerances on it's components. Behavior is represented using a configuration space representation, which we argue will be a useful tool for designers.

Using C-spaces for tolerance synthesis

The objective of design is to create a specification for functionally acceptable parts. Tolerances must be assigned to the design dimensions and play an important role in deciding if the design really exhibits the desired behavior when it is manufactured. It is therefore important that tolerance allocation is based on an understanding of the semantics of tolerance rather than adherence to conve...

Kenematic Tolerance Analysis

We present a general method for worst-case limlt kinematic tolerance analysis: computing the range of variation in the kinematic function of a mecnanism [rom its part tolerance specifications. The method covers fixed and changing contact mechanisms with parametric or geometric part tolerances. We develop a new model of kincmaLic variation, called kinematic tolerance space, that generalizes the ...

Parametric kinematic tolerance analysis of general planar systems

We present an algorithm for functional kinematic tolerance analysis of general planar mechanical systems with parametric tolerances. The algorithm performs worst-case analysis of systems of curved parts with contact changes, including open and closed kinematic chains. It computes quantitative variations and helps designers detect qualitative variations, such as blocking and under-cutting. The a...

Parametric kinematic tolerance analysis of planar mechanisms

We present an efficient algorithm for worst-case and statistical kinematic tolerance analysis of mechanisms with parametric part tolerances. The algorithm derives the kinematic variation directly from the part geometry, the part degrees of freedom, and the allowable parameter variations. It first derives a geometric representation of the kinematic variation as parametric surfaces in the mechani...
